The White House last night condemned a train bombing in Russia that killed at least 41 people near rebel Chechnya and pledged solidarity in the fight against "acts of terrorism."

"The United States strongly condemns this terrorist act and all acts of terrorism," White House press secretary Mr Scott McClellan said in a statement.

"We stand with the Russian people in their fight against terrorism."

The statement offered condolences to the families of the victims.
