Wexford man found hanging in Garda cell

Gardai in Wexford are investigating the death of a prisoner in custody

Gardai in Wexford are investigating the death of a prisoner in custody. Mr David O'Connor (34) of St Aidan's Crescent was found hanging in a cell in Wexford Garda station less than an hour after he was arrested for a minor offence, a Garda source confirmed.

Attempts to revive Mr O'Connor failed. He was arrested about midnight on Friday and brought to Wexford Garda station, a Garda spokesman said.

Mr O'Connor was found hanging in his cell about 12.50 a.m. He was brought to Wexford General Hospital and was pronounced dead soon afterwards. The death in the station would be investigated in the normal way, but an internal Garda inquiry was also likely, said a Garda spokesman.

Gardai declined to say why Mr O'Connor had been arrested. A post-mortem was carried out on Saturday.
