Washington - Political common sense trumped political correctness on Wednesday when Washington's black mayor, Mr Anthony Williams, rehired a white aide whose use of the word "niggardly" offended an African-American subordinate.
The single word - which means "miserly" but sounds like a racial epithet - was used accurately and in context last month by Mr David Howard, head of the city's Office of Public Advocate.
