Puppies given as Christmas presents should be bought from reputable breeders rather than from "puppy farms" where dogs are often kept in filthy, overcrowded and cruel conditions, animal welfare groups have said.

The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said Christmas was not a suitable time to give a child a new pet as it could be treated as "just another toy" and neglected.
