Viking ship prepares for voyage home

The Sea Stallion Viking warship will be hoisted out of the National Museum today to prepare for its voyage back to Denmark.

The vessel will be lifted about 150ft out of Clarke Square, Collins Barracks, where it has been on show to the public for the last nine months.

Weather permitting, it will be gently lowered into the main museum car park at 3pm, and at 2am the replica vessel will be lifted over the Luas track to the quays where it will be carried on a low-loader to Dublin port.

The Sea Stallionwill undergo repairs before it leaves Dublin at the end of June.

The vessel sailed back into Dublin last August, almost 1,000 years after its original departure. The project recreated the epic voyage that Vikings made from Denmark to Ireland.
