Vice-chancellor to retire

The vice-chancellor of the University of Ulster, Lord Smith of Clifton, is to retire in September

The vice-chancellor of the University of Ulster, Lord Smith of Clifton, is to retire in September. Lord Smith (61) is best known for his successful campaign to build the Springvale educational campus on Belfast's "peace line".

Before he came to the University of Ulster in 1991, he was professor of political studies and senior vice-principal at Queen Mary College, University of London. He was also chairman of the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust, vicepresident of the UK Political Studies Association, and former chairman of the Statesman and Nation publishing company.
