The Government today gave almost €1 million funding to 13 groups supporting emigrants in the United States.

Announcing today's €966,000 in funds, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern said the grants reflect the Government's continuing commitment to supporting vulnerable members of the Irish community abroad.

"I deeply appreciate the work of the Irish immigration centres across the US on behalf of our most vulnerable citizens.

"The wide range of information, advisory and support services that the centres offer are of great benefit to the Irish community, including the elderly, in the US," he said.

"Their services are of particular value to the undocumented Irish whose welfare remains an issue of the highest priority for the Government," he said.

The Government gave funding of €111,000 in April to the Coalition of Irish Immigration Centres and the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform.
