More than 2,000 households to the east of Athlone town are without water until at least tomorrow afternoon following the detection of sulphide in a supply from a ground well.

Residents in the affected areas in the eastern side of the River Shannon bridge are being advised to only use their water for flushing toilets. The town council is directing people to a number of taps in the town for drinking and cooking water.

The problem was identified last night, and locals have been informed through a leaflet campaign and updates on local radio. Test results on water samples taken from a ground well in the Golden Island area are expected back tomorrow afternoon.

The council said not using the water supply on the east side was a precautionary measure.
