Police are treating as attempted murder two separate gun attacks in the North on Monday night. It is not thought that either attack was paramilitary-related, writes Theresa Judge in Belfast.
A man in his 50s was shot in the arm by two gunmen at about 6 p.m. as he worked in the premises of a haulage firm at Armagh Road, Newry. The men had asked for the victim by name. They fired twice, but the gun jammed and the man managed to run off. He was hit in the arm as the gunmen opened fire a second time. The victim did not suffer serious injury and was released from hospital after treatment on Monday night.
The second shooting was at a greyhound track outside Lisburn at about 9 p.m. A 36-year-old man was shot as he sat in the control box of Ballyskeagh Racing Stadium. He was hit a number of times in the back and upper body, and his condition in hospital yesterday was described as "stable". A police spokeswoman said the two attacks were not linked.
