One of next year's major anniversaries is commemorated in The Madness from Within, a documentary marking the 75th anniversary of the Civil War, to be broadcast on January 21st. Later in 1998, Cathal O'Shannon presents three documentaries on the 1798 Rebellion.
The True Lives series of documentaries returns, with programmes on the showband era, Ireland's Jewish community, polygamy in the US and The McCourts of Limerick, an account of the Angela's Ashes story made by Frank McCourt's nephew.
Out of the Blue is the title of a new series presented by Derek Davis on Ireland's rivers, canals, lakes and the sea. It starts on January 29th.
Eurovision compere Carrie Crowley presents Pot Luck, a new cookery game-show to be broadcast every Monday to Thursday from January 12th. The show features 37 top chefs, who compete to create "the best taste in the least time".
One of the few new faces in the schedule is Sarah Kavanagh, a copresenter of Drive, a new motoring programme, also starting in January. The main presenter is Karl Tsigdinos.
Saturday Sport Live replaces the recently-axed Sports Stadium. RTE says the new programme, which is sponsored by Standard Life, will focus on live sporting events.
In keeping with its new "yoof" image, Network 2 has bought This Life, the upmarket soap about young professional singles and couples in London.
Among the films scheduled on RTE One in the coming weeks are Shallow Grave, The Prince of Tides, Muriel's Wedding, Nell, The Age of Innocence, Disclosure, and The Snapper.
