The Teachers Union of Ireland has threatened to take industrial action in order to secure the implementation of the Programme for Competitiveness and Work.

The TUI's threat follows the decision by secondary school managers to hold a ballot on a policy of non co operation with the Department of Education. The secondary school managers have rejected the £75 million pay deal for post primary teachers under the PCW due to reservations about the continuing use of seniority to determine promotions to middle ranking posts and the absence of guaranteed substitution and supervision.

The TUI general secretary, Mr Jim Dorney, warned the union would take "whatever means are necessary" to secure, the conversion of temporary jobs to permanent posts agreed under the PCW, as well as the agreements on increases in posts, allowances and early retirement.
