Trinity Mirror, Britain's largest regional newspaper group, said today it would shed a total of 800 jobs in the next two years.

The cuts come as part of a major cost-cutting programme to boost its flagging profits.

Chief executive Mr Philip Graf told reporters the job cuts were part of an effort to eliminate £30 million - £35 million sterling in annual costs by 2003.

Already this year, 200 jobs had been lost and 600 more were on the way, Mr Graf said.
