The deaths of two Cork teenagers have prompted an outpouring of grief and emotion in an area of Cork city in what appears to have been a tragic traffic accident.

The girls, Jennifer McCarthy and Laura Wise, both aged 14, died at the Cork University Hospital on Wednesday after they had been struck on Monday by a pick-up truck on their way home from school at the North Presentation Convent.

The girls, from the Fairhill area, were close friends and died within a short time of each other at the Cork Regional Hospital. All day on Wednesday, when news spread about the tragedy, many people arrived at the Church of the Resurrection in Farranree to pray for them.

Hundreds were present last night at the removal service for the two girls. More are expected today for the funerals.
