Three men have appeared in court charged in connection with the hijacking of a lorry carrying €300,000 worth of vodka in Co Meath yesterday.

The men were charged at Longford District Court with handling stolen property, namely 22 pallets of vodka at Delvin, Co Westmeath under Section 17 of the Criminal Justice Theft & Fraud Act.

Thomas Maxwell (43), from Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath; Simon Maxwell (43), also from Co Westmeath; and Philip Hickey (43), from Athboy, Co Meath, were remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison.

They are due to appear again at Longford District Court on April 18th.

Judge John Neilan set bail for each of the men at €9,000, with an independent surety each of €15,000.

He ordered them to surrender their passports, sign on at their local Garda station four days a week and comply with a curfew.

No contact must be made with each other or witnesses must not be interfered with, the judge said. The court heard that each man had nothing to say when formally charged with the offence by gardaí.
