Three people were last night charged with possession of two high-powered AK-47 assault rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition seized in police searches in Belfast.
The RUC said that the guns were found during searches of houses in nationalist areas of west and north Belfast on Wednesday. A 31-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were charged with possession of one of the guns, with intent to endanger life, following a weapons find at a house off the Falls Road. They were also charged with possession of documents likely to be of use to terrorists. A 24-year-old woman was charged with possession of the second AK-47, with intent to endanger life, after its discovery at a house in north Belfast.
All three are expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates' Court tomorrow.
