Bangkok - The death toll from flash floods and landslides that devastated seven villages in northern Thailand rose to 76 yesterday and some 30 other people were missing, officials said.
Soldiers and relief workers continued to pull bodies from the tangle of uprooted trees, wreckage and mud in Phetachuban province's Lom Sak district where the disaster struck before dawn on Saturday. Most of the victims were women and children who were asleep when the floodwaters hit. Survivors said they managed to scramble into the treetops to escape the torrent that swept their neighbours away.
