AN ANNOUNCEMENT by Tesco that it is to relocate more than 200 jobs from a distribution centre in west Dublin has been described as a major blow to the area.
The retailer yesterday indicated it will amalgamate its Tallaght warehousing operation with its new distribution facility in Donabate, north Co Dublin.
Tesco said up to half of the Tallaght staff could be accommodated at the Donabate site, while the remainder would be offered employment elsewhere in the company.
The company stressed that there would be no compulsory redundancies, and said it is planning to recruit up to 1,000 employees this year.
Siptu, which represents more than 200 staff employed in the Tallaght facility, said it would be working to minimise job losses. John Dunne of Siptu said: "We will do everything we can to protect the jobs and the conditions of employment of our members."
Local Fianna Fáil TD Charlie O'Connor said he was disappointed by the decision and that he will monitor the situation to ensure the jobs are replaced.
"I have already been in contact with Minister Micheál Martin and I would urge representatives to ensure that these local workers are fully supported in seeking further employment. They need every possible assistance at this difficult time."
Fine Gael TD Brian Hayes said that commuting to Donabate may not be possible for many workers and that his thoughts go out to the staff.
"Coming on the back of job losses at Jacobs and Microprint, there are now real fears that Tallaght is suffering badly in terms of employment," he said.
Mr Hayes also condemned the manner in which the staff were told of the decision to relocate by Tesco, saying that it "breaks any understanding of decency and respect which should occur within industrial relations".
