A teenager charged in connection with a shooting in which a man was seriously injured has been refused bail after gardaí alleged he was aligned to a feuding faction.

Liam Kelly (19), with addresses in the Moyross and Thomondgate areas of Limerick city, is charged with having a firearm with intent to endanger life at St Munchin's Street in St Mary's Park on September 23th last.

Yesterday at his bail hearing Det Garda Enda Haugh said the State was objecting to bail because of the seriousness of the charge, and because the accused was allegedly an active member of a feuding faction.

The feud had resulted in the loss of a number of lives.

He said the alleged injured party in this case suffered two gunshot wounds to his back and stomach, and was still recovering in hospital.

The court heard that if convicted Mr Kelly faced penalties of up to life in prison.

Det Garda Haugh said the alleged victim was "seriously in fear of his life", and claimed witnesses may be intimidated if bail is granted.

Defence solicitor John Herbert said there was no evidence to suggest his client had shot the injured party.

His client had been shot twice in June, and he "hadn't tried to exact revenge".

Judge Tom O'Donnell remanded Mr Kelly in custody until October 16th, when he is due to appear before Limerick District Court.
