PARIS - French teachers held a strike yesterday to protest about classroom overcrowding and job shedding imposed by the government.

The strike, called by five unions representing 825,000 teachers from nursery to university level, was the first major stoppage of the autumn in France, where unemployment and government unpopularity have reached record levels.
