A GROUP of environmental engineers at Trinity College Dublin has managed to raise more than €24,000 in six weeks to save a solar water disinfection system in the drought-stricken rural village of Ndulyani, Kenya, writes Frank McDonald.

Donations ranged from €5 to €3,000, much of it raised through fundit.ie. “We surged through the final week, raising over €10,000 to break through our €22,000 target with two days till the deadline”, said PhD student Joanne Mac Mahon.

“I can’t believe we exceeded the target in the end. It’s been a long few weeks but I’m absolutely thrilled that we got there. The support we received has been amazing, particularly as it was January in a recession,” she told The Irish Times.
