Afghan officials said this morning a rocket attack in the capital was probably the work of remnants of the ousted Taliban movement, but said it would not disrupt the Loya Jirga grand assembly in its efforts to form a government.

Two rockets were fired near the US embassy in Kabul last night, a reminder of the culture of violence still plaguing the country and the tough task President Hamid Karzai faces in his efforts to unite its fractious ethnic groups.

President Karzai is due to present his cabinet to the Loya Jirga (Grand Assembly) at around 8.30 a.m. Irish time, after asking the gathering for an extra day to complete the task.

Elected in a landslide by the assembly last week, he also said he would take an official oath of office before the Loya Jirga today, rather than the scheduled June 22nd.
