Maze escaper Mr Brendan McFarlane was yesterday remanded until next October, on continuing bail of £100,000, by the Special Criminal Court in Dublin on charges connected with the 1983 kidnap of supermarket executive Mr Don Tidey.

Mr McFarlane (48), Jamaica Street, Belfast, is charged with falsely imprisoning Mr Tidey and with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life at Derrada Wood, Ballinamore, Co Leitrim.

Assistant State Solicitor Ms Kathleen Leader said High Court proceedings were in train and a stay had been put on Mr McFarlane's trial pending the outcome.

Mr McFarlane was remanded on continuing bail of £100,000 until October 30th.
