Supermarket truck with dairy products impounded by gardai

A truck from a supermarket chain carrying dairy products believed to have originated in Britain was impounded by gardaí in Co Wicklow this morning.

A truck has its wheels disinfected as part of on-going efforts to halt the spread of the disease

The vehicle was stopped five miles south of Arklow at Inch just before 5 o'clock.

A Garda spokesman said the vehicle had unsatisfactory documentation for its cargo and was impounded at Arklow Garda Station pending investigation.

Meanwhile more than 300 sheep on a Co Mayo farm will be slaughtered today as a precaution against foot-and-mouth.

It is believed the sheep were brought to the farm from England 14 days ago.

Veterinary inspectors are continuing to monitor nearly 40 farms in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.

Farms in the Carlow and Kilkenny areas are also being examined as a precaution.
