A student appeared in court yesterday charged with the murder of two Chinese people in their Dublin flat last week. Mr Yu Jie (23), originally from Shenyang in north-east China, with an address at McKee Avenue, Finglas, Dublin, was charged with the murder of Mr Yue Feng (19) and Ms Liu Qing (19) on March 12th. The bodies of the two were found in a burntout apartment at Blackhall Square, North King Street.

Yesterday, in Dublin District Court, Det Supt Cormac Gordon applied to have Mr Jie remanded in custody for a week. Mr Eugene Dunne, Mr Jie's solicitor, said he had no objection.

Mr Dunne applied for free legal aid, as Mr Jie was a student working part-time. Judge David Anderson granted this and remanded him in custody until next Friday.
