Southampton today confirmed Gordon Strachan as their new manager, just a day after sacking Stuart Gray.
Gray was dismissed four months after being handed the job on a permanent basis following the Saints' poor start to the season, which has left them second bottom of the table with six defeats in eight matches.
Announcing the decision on the club's official website, chairman Rupert Lowe said: "This appointment is about the long term future of Southampton Football Club and our fans".
Strachan, 44, left Coventry City in September after five years in charge, four months after the Sky Blues' were relegated to the first division, ending their 34-year stay in the top flight.
Southampton, yet to win at their new St Mary's stadium, have suffered by a lack of goals, scoring only five times this season. They lost 2-0 at fellow strugglers West Ham United on Saturday.
Southampton were in contention for a UEFA Cup place when Glenn Hoddle resigned in March to take over at Tottenham Hotspur.
