Spain to pay for ETA campaign

Spain will assume debts of billions of pesetas owed to victims of ETA to help smooth the path to eventual peace talks after the Basque guerrilla group's ceasefire, El Pais reported yesterday.

The Deputy Interior Secretary, Mr Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo, said the government would ask parliament for an extraordinary loan to pay victims once it has determined the total fines awarded by courts.
