Six taxi drivers were today given the maximum fine in the District Court in Dublin for using MGO (green diesel) in their taxis.

The evidence in court pointed to the supply of this fuel from an illegal source in the Dunsink area of Finglas.

Judge Coughlan handed down the maximum fine of €1,900 to each taxi driver with a strong recommendation through the DPP that the Garda Superintendent object to the renewal of their taxi licences.

The judge in his summing up maintained that this illegal supplier is only in existence because he is being supported by the likes of the taxi fraternity.
