Six people were arrested in Sligo yesterday by detectives investigating the murder of 26-year-old Hughie McGinley, who was shot in the head in front of his partner and baby last April.

Three men and three women were arrested after gardaí raided a number of addresses in Sligo. They are being held at Garda stations in Sligo, Manorhamilton and Carrick-on-Shannon under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, under which they can be detained for 72 hours.

It is understood that the six people arrested yesterday morning, who are aged 19 to 27, were not among a group of 14 people arrested in the weeks following the murder.

Mr McGinley, from Connaughton Road, in Sligo town, was shot as he sat in a parked van in the centre of the town on the afternoon of April 28th last. He was shot by the pillion passenger of a motorbike which pulled up alongside him.

The killing was widely believed to have been linked to an ongoing feud between two Sligo-based families.

None of the 14 people arrested last May in connection with the killing was subsequently charged.
