The Northern Secretary, Sir Patrick Mayhew, has been asked by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Paris to scrap a proposed anti sectarian television advertisement which incorporates footage of the Holocaust.

Plans for the campaign had been announced on the BBC Newsnight programme last month by Sir Patrick. The protest from the Simon Wiesenthal organisation follows reports that the film will draw comparisons between the plight of Jews in Germany in the 1930s and the troubles in Northern Ireland. A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Office said no decision had yet been taken.
