THE calling of the general election has been welcomed by the Sinn Fein president, Mr Gerry Adams, who said his party was confident of increasing its mandate.

Mr Adams said Sinn Fein was committed to halting the decline in rural Ireland through "investment in infrastructure, agriculture and fisheries and working in the fight against drugs and crime".

There are 15 candidates standing in 14 constituencies for Sinn Fein.
