An Irish lorry driver who was shot on Tuesday by robbers on a dual carriageway near Holyhead has been transferred to a Liverpool hospital. Dubliner Mr Daniel Rodgers (23) suffered 50 shotgun pellet wounds to his arm and chest. He was taken to Bangor Hospital for emergency treatment but has since been transferred to Whiston Hospital, Liverpool, where his condition was described as comfortable.

The shooting occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on the A55, south of Holyhead. The driver had been travelling to Leicestershire with a delivery of clothing.

It is believed he pulled on to the hard shoulder after being flagged down by a light-coloured Vauxhall car, resembling a police vehicle. Two men got out of the car and asked him what he was carrying.

They became agitated when they discovered the contents and shot Mr Rodgers with Mr Rodgers raised the alarm by calling his employers in Dublin and the police on a mobile phone.

A spokesman for transport company TNT said: "It's shocking and very surprising. There were no goods of very high value in the vehicle." The company arranged for the family of the driver, who was employed by a sub-contractor in Dublin, to travel to the hospital.

Police in Anglesea have set up an incident room and are appealing for witnesses. They said they were unaware of any motive for the attack and believed it might have been opportunistic.
