A man in his 30s who was stabbed with a syringe in a city centre shop on Saturday night remains in a serious condition in a Dublin hospital this evening.

The garda press office said a man arrested at the scene also remained in hospital this evening where he continues to be treated for a leg injury.

The worker, a supervisor who has been named as Jahan Zaib Butt, was stabbed in the hand with a syringe during the raid which occurred at around 10pm on Saturday evening after a man entered the Spar shop on James' Street on Saturday night and threatened the two male staff.

Mr Butt later collapsed and was taken to St James's Hospital. It is not thought that his condition is directly connected to the stabbing and may be due to an underlying medical condition.

A suspect, who was arrested at the scene was also taken to St James’s Hospital on Saturday night and detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

He remained in the hospital this morning where he  is being treated for a leg injury.

The shop, located across the road from the entrance from the hospital, was open for business today. A member of staff said they had no comment to make on the attack.

In a statement released this evening SPAR Ireland said it provided guidance on appropriate security procedures in all its stores.

"At this time our main concern is the wellbeing of Jahan Zaib Butt and our thoughts are with his family and friends," the statement read.

"The safety of employees is of paramount importance and SPAR provides guidance to its independent retailers to put in place the appropriate security procedures and protocols in order to prioritise the safety of store staff."
