GARDA COMMISSIONER Fachtna Murphy has described as “deplorable” an incident in which shots were fired at gardaí in Dublin early yesterday.

The incident happened when gardaí were investigating reports of damage to a house on Greenfort Close in Clondalkin at about 1am.

A number of shots were fired in the direction of a neighbouring house where three gardaí were speaking to a resident. A bullet pierced the front door of the house and one of the gardaí received minor injuries.

“I want to condemn this deplorable attack,” said Mr Murphy. “I have directed that local gardaí . . . who are investigating the incident receive whatever assistance they require from national units.”
