London - Rates of key sexually-transmitted diseases have rocketed in Britain in the past five years while HIV infection is showing no sign of decline, official figures show.

The Public Health Laboratory Service found diagnoses of gonorrhoea, syphilis and chlamydia in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have more than doubled between 1995 and 2000.
