A glance at the week that was
Full of compressed air
A New Zealand truck driver inflated "like a balloon" after being impaled in the thigh by a high-pressure air cylinder. Steven McCormack slipped on his truck's foot plate, breaking a compressed-air hose that powered the vehicle's brakes.
Workmates rushed to the 48-year-old's aid as McCormack was pumped full of the gas, causing enormous swelling. Doctors later said the air had separated fat from muscle in McCormack's body but had not entered his bloodstream or burst his skin, meaning he was lucky to be alive.
