GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING a gangland murder have arrested seven people. The suspects are being held in Garda stations across Dublin in relation to the murder of Stephen Byrne in the north inner city last July.
The seven arrested, including two women and a male teenager, were detained at addresses mainly in the north inner city yesterday morning during a series of co-ordinated raids.
Four are men ranging in age from 20 to 50 who are being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. They can be held for up to 72 hours without charge. The other three, two women in their late 20s and early 30s, and a young man in his late teens, are being detained under Section 50 of the Offences Against the State Act.
They can be held for up to seven days without charge. Their arrests bring to 13 the number of people detained since the murder.
Gardaí believe some of those arrested yesterday have key information around the planning of the killing while others are believed to have been on the scene or been close to the suspected gunman.
Stephen Byrne was shot dead on the afternoon of July 13th last at the junction of St Laurence Place East and Sheriff Street in Dublin’s north inner city.
