Second witness identifies diary

London - A second secretary yesterday identified a small, dark blue diary as Lord Archer's genuine office diary for 1986. Ms Caroline Norman told an Old Bailey jury that the book was the one she used with senior secretary, Ms Angela Peppiatt, and contained entries in her writing.

The prosecution claims the diary was suppressed by Lord Archer during his 1987 libel case against the Daily Star, and substituted with a fake diary which has since disappeared. The novelist and former deputy chairman of the Conservative Party successfully sued the newspaper in July 1987 and was awarded £500,000 damages after it alleged he had slept with a prostitute in September 1986.
