A search will continue today for the body of an English man who is believed to have drowned in a swimming accident off the Connemara coast at the weekend.
James Ravenscroft (29) went swimming early on Sunday with a friend, Heather Coles (27), near Eyrephort beach along the Sky Road in Co Galway.
The alarm was raised when the pair failed to return to shore several hours later, and the body of Ms Coles, from London, was recovered around lunchtime over a mile offshore west of Inishturk island.
So far there has been no sign of Mr Ravenscroft's body, and an Irish Coast Guard helicopter, RNLI lifeboats from Clifden and Achill and Irish Coast Guard shore units continued with the search yesterday with Naval Service and Garda divers.
John Roberts, RNLI Clifden's operations manager, said an extensive area as far as Omey Island off Claddaghduff had been covered, and the search was now focusing on the immediate area off Eyrephort beach.
The swimmers were among a group of 12 people holidaying in the area. The alarm was raised by two Germans in a camper van who were staying on the beach.
Meanwhile gardaí say they are are still searching the River Corrib and shoreline in Galway Bay for a man who jumped into the river on Thursday in an attempt to avoid being caught for shoplifting.
The man, in his 20s and believed to be from Kerry, was followed from a shop in Eglinton Street by a security guard. During the pursuit the man jumped into the river between Salmon Weir Bridge and O'Brien's Bridge, and he was carried down-river by a fast-flowing current.
