London - Modern political jargon has provided a rich fund of new words and phrases for the latest edition of Roget's Thesaurus, which is published this week. "Focus group", "mission statement", "sleaze factor", "on-message", and "spin doctor" all find their way into the hallowed pages of the first new edition of the book, a well-respected guide to the English language, for 11 years.
In for the first time are "road rage", "website", "virtual reality", "keyhole surgery", "recreational drugs", "care in the community" and "Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease".
In addition, "Britpop", "date rape", "serial monogamy", "Prozac," "alcopop" and "eating disorder" are all listed. "Girl power", "touchy-feely" and "double whammy" are among the 5,000 words and phrases included for the first time. And so are "dangly bits" (genitalia), "bad hair day" (misfortune) and "bit of rough" (low fellow).
