An 84-year-old retired soldier has been awarded £7,500 for deafness caused during his time as an Army firing range instructor. Making the award in Cork Circuit Court yesterday, Judge A.G. Murphy said the Army's advice, in the 1950s and 1960s, for soldiers to use cotton wool soaked with Vaseline as an effective safeguard when discharging weapons was a "glossing exercise".
Mr Daniel Condon (84), of Kilbarry Place, Dublin Hill, Cork, sued the Minister for Defence for the loss of hearing due to exposure to gunfire and explosives.
