Auckland - Seventy weary Afghan refugees, first rescued from a sinking Indonesian boat a month ago, arrived in New Zealand yesterday.

The Afghans had been off-loaded from an Australian warship off Nauru on the latest leg of their voyage from their homeland. They are all expected to claim political asylum in New Zealand.

A group of over 200 Palestinian and Iraqi refugees were last night still refusing to disembark from an Australian navy ship off Nauru and have been on board the vessel for almost three weeks, reports Conor Lally in Sydney.
