Legal proceedings against a school principal who was told by a High Court judge last month he must allow a pupil suspended for smoking cannabis to resume classes, have been adjourned.

On January 6th, the High Court heard David McKenna (15) was caught smoking cannabis last October on a school trip to the Aran Islands. He is a pupil of Colaiste Raithin, Bray, Co Wicklow. Last month's hearing was told that principal Mr Gearoid O Ciarain was secretary of the board of management that decided in October to suspend the boy. Following a board meeting on November 15th, the boys' parents were told the suspension was being lifted and their son was welcome to attend school.

However, when the boy returned to school on December 1st, he was given a letter by Mr O Ciarain stating he was still suspended.
