THE management bodies of the voluntary secondary schools and the VECs have jointly informed the Minister for Education that current proposals on teacher promotions are not acceptable.

The proposals involve seniority being used as the criterion for most promotions in secondary schools and an element of seniority being introduced into the promotion criteria for vocational teachers.

In an unusual co ordinated move, the Joint Managerial Body which represents Catholic and Protestant secondary schools, and the Irish Vocational Education Association, representing the vocational schools, have warned that they will reject the Government's package for implementing the PCW unless these proposals are changed.

Meanwhile fresh opposition to the establishment of regional education boards to run schools and colleges was expressed yesterday by the body representing the country's local authorities.

The Local Authority Members Association said it rejected plans for regional boards and suggested that only county based boards could run schools efficiently. Regional bodies, it claimed, removed responsibility from local councillors who were best equipped to identify educational needs in their areas.
