An ambitious plan for the development of a range of leisure facilities in Waterford estuary was published yesterday.
The Marine Institute study found there was considerable scope for expansion in marina and other leisure facilities which would enhance the estuary's status and attract more tourists. It recommends the development of a "mini-cruising ground" which would allow boat-owners to stop off at various points of interest throughout the estuary. New marinas, it suggests, should be provided at Dunmore East, Waterford city and New Ross.
The study, Options for Marine Leisure Development in Water- ford Estuary, provides a strategy for local authorities in Wexford and Waterford when drawing up development plans. The main towns and villages to benefit would be Dunmore East, Passage East, Duncannon, Arthurstown, Ballyhack and Cheekpoint on Waterford harbour, as well as the inland locations of Waterford city, New Ross and Carrick-on-Suir.
The report found that while there was a wealth of marine related activities in the estuary, further development was hampered by a lack of berthing facilities.
A "mini-cruising ground" would involve the provision of such facilities, ranging from marinas to seasonal boarding pontoons, throughout the estuary. A wide range of leisure activities and services such as fishing, boating, canoeing and diving could be accommodated.
