Belgrade - Serbia's president, Mr Milan Milutinovic, is alleged to be under house arrest and to have fallen out of favour with his long-time political ally, Mr Slobodan Milosevic, the Yugoslav president, according to an opposition spokesman.

Mr Milutinovic, a member of Mr Milosevic's Socialist Party of Serbia, has been indicted for war crimes by the Hague Tribunal in connection with events in Kosovo this year. Before he was Serbian president, he was the Yugoslav foreign minister and Yugoslav ambassador to Greece.

The allegations of his confinement come at a time when many of Mr Milosevic's circle are rumoured to be increasingly concerned about their futures: either because they are sought by the Hague Tribunal or because they are blocked from leaving the country while they continue to feature on a list of 300 Yugoslav officials unable to travel to EU countries.
