Vatican City - Pope John Paul II sent a personal message of thanks to the Cuban leader, Dr Fidel Castro, for allowing Christmas celebrations to take place last week in Cuba for the first time in 30 years.

"I wish to express my deep satisfaction concerning the decision to give Christmas its festive character for all Cubans, in keeping with tradition," the Pope wrote in his letter dated December 23rd but published only yesterday.
