An Irish News poll has prompted an overwhelming response in favour of a new IRA ceasefire.

An Irish News poll has prompted an overwhelming response in favour of a new IRA ceasefire.

To the question, "should the IRA call a new ceasefire now?"

13,368, or 92 per cent, voted yes, while 1,188, 8 per cent, voted no.

The newspaper said the response was the biggest of all the telephone polls it had conducted. It illustrated that the IRA should now focus on the public consensus for a new ceasefire.

Mr Gerry O hEara, Sinn Fein's Northern chairman, complained that the question put in the poll was simplistic.

He will write to the Irish News asking for a new poll containing the question: "Do you believe negotiations, without preconditions and involving all parties, should be instigated by both governments immediately?"
