Making a point of order in an atmosphere of disorder is not in order.

I would respectfully suggest that the action contemplated by members of the (Garda) force is unjustified, unwarranted and out of all proportion to the reality of the situation as it currently stands.

- The Minister for Justice, Equality & Law Reform, Mr O'Donoghue.

You created a clear atmosphere of empathy with them (the gardai) and the result was that they had a very definite expectation that Fianna Fail and particularly Fianna Fail's man in Justice, John O'Donoghue, would deliver on the Garda pay issue when elected to government.

Tomorrow, unless this Government stops acting like a chorus of a Greek tragedy and starts performing like a Government that is capable of running the State, our society is going to be put in danger to an extent that is unimaginable.

I want to suggest that it is now time to reconsider the bar on gardai forming a trade union. In other countries, the police forces are allowed to be members of trade unions without any deleterious effects.
