SEANAD REPORT:THE HOUSE convened in sombre mood yesterday to mark the sudden passing of one of its most popular members. It will not sit today as a mark of respect to Kieran Phelan (FF), whose unexpected death shocked colleagues.
Condolences were expressed to Mr Phelan’s wife, Mary, to their five children, Fiona, Martina, Brenda, Aisling and Patrick; his mother, Delia; his siblings and extended family.
Cathaoirleach Pat Moylan recalled his party colleague’s integrity, calm demeanour and unfailing sense of humour. Those qualities had won him respect and friendship across party political boundaries. Mr Phelan (60) had been elected to the House on the Industrial and Commercial Panel in 2002 and again in 2007.
Seanad leader Donie Cassidy described Mr Phelan as a true gentleman who had been loved for his humorous personality and genuine way. “He was proud to be a member of Seanad Éireann and was one of its best attendees.”
Fine Gael Seanad leader Frances Fitzgerald said jovial, kind, friendly and warm were the key words she would always associate with him.
Joe O’Toole (Ind) said that Mr Phelan had been a model public representative in terms of commitment and of taking his job seriously.
Alex White (Lab) said it could truly be said of Kieran Phelan that he “was impossible not to like”.
Dan Boyle (Green), deputy Seanad leader, referred indirectly to the demise of senators Tony Kett and Peter Callanan, and said that death had visited the 23rd Seanad far too often. “While we have been better prepared for the passing of other colleagues, an unexpected death is particularly hard to take.”
A minute’s silence was observed.
