IN THE last year a total of 197 prisoners absconded from open centres, of whom 144 had since returned to custody and 53 remained at large, the Minister for Justice, Mrs Owen, said. In a written reply to Ms Liz O'Donnell (PD, Dublin South) the Minister said that persons absconding from an open centre were automatically transferred to a secure prison when recaptured.
